An HbA1c test measures the amount of blood sugar (glucose) attached to hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. An HbA1c test shows what the average amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin has been over the past six to eight weeks. It’s a six- to eight-week average because that’s typically how long a red blood cell lives.

If your HbA1c levels are high, it may be a sign of diabetes. Diabetes can cause permanent damage to your organs and lead to strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure, leg and foot amputations, and blindness.

It is recommended that you drink plenty of fluids the day before collecting your sample.

An HbA1c test shows what the average amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin has been over the past six to eight weeks. The food you have recently eaten does not affect the HbA1c test, so you do not need to fast to prepare for this blood test.

Conditions that may affect the accuracy of an HbA1c result include: anemia, cystic fibrosis, hemoglobin or red blood cell abnormalities (e.g., sickle cell anemia or thalassemia), chronic kidney (renal) disease or liver disease.

Note: Note that pregnant women or 2 months postpartum are not eligible for testing.

Your test results will be available online in 7-10 days after you send us back your kit.

Hemoglobin HbA1c (HbA1c is a form of hemoglobin (a blood pigment that carries oxygen) that is bound to glucose. The normal range for HbA1c is less than 5.7%. HbA1c levels measure blood glucose levels over the past six to eight weeks and do not reflect the daily ups and downs of blood glucose. High HbA1c levels indicate poorer control of diabetes than levels in the normal range.

Your HbA1c test result is given in percentages. The higher the percentage, the higher your blood sugar levels have been:

  • Levels below 5.7% indicate normal HbA1c levels
  • Levels between 5.7%-6.4% may indicate pre-diabetes. Having pre-diabetes is a risk factor for getting type 2 Diabetes. People with pre-diabetes may need to get their HbA1c levels retested every year.
  • Levels 6.5% or higher are high and may indicate diabetes. If you already have diabetes, an HbA1c test can help monitor your condition and glucose levels and help to determine how well you are managing your diabetes.
If your HbA1c levels suggest pre-diabetes or diabetes, a healthcare provider from LifeLabs clinical partner MD Connected will reach out to you with recommendations for lifestyle changes that can improve your health.

The Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) is an information repository that gives authorized health care providers access to lab test orders and results from hospitals, community labs and public health labs. As patients move between hospitals, family physicians, home care and long-term care settings, OLIS makes viewing patients’ current and past test results easier and enables treatment decisions.
