Colorectal Health (FIT) Kit

The Colorectal Health (FIT) kit can help optimize your colorectal health by screening for colorectal cancer and pre-cancerous growths.

When colorectal cancer is caught early, 9 out of 10 people can be cured. If you have colorectal cancer and do not get screened, you may miss the chance for early and more effective treatment.

The Colorectal Health (FIT) kit checks your fecal (poop) sample for tiny amounts of blood, which can be caused by colon cancer and some pre-cancerous growths. This at-home collection kit offers a quick, easy, and convenient way to order your kit and collect your sample from the comfort and privacy of your home. You will have six months to use your kit. When you send your FIT sample to LifeLabs, it will be tested for colorectal cancer. Your results will be available online.

What is included with this kit?
The Colorectal Health (FIT) Kit includes a diagnostic test, at-home collection supplies and a signed request form.

A convenient way to screen for colorectal cancer from the comfort of your home.

With a stool (poop) sample, and easy-to-follow instructions, the power to test for colorectal cancer is in your hands.

If you meet the requirements for the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), a doctor from LifeLabs' clinical partner, Trillium Health Partners, will sign the request form.

Follow four simple steps to complete your testing.

  1. Order your Colorectal Health Kit. Our kit is delivered in discreet packaging to protect your privacy.
  2. Collect your sample using the stool (poop) sample collection device included in your kit. Read the paper instructions that come with the kit, watch the short animated film or download a digital copy of the instructions.
  3. Drop your sample off at your closest LifeLabs location or mail your completed test in the pre-paid envelope.
  4. Receive your results. Results can be viewed online using our secure platform.
The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a cancer screening test for colorectal cancer. Cancer screening is testing done on people who are at risk of getting cancer, but who have no symptoms and generally feel fine.

FIT checks your stool (poop) sample for tiny amounts of blood, which can be caused by colon cancer and some pre-cancerous growths. The Colorectal Health Kit offers a quick, easy, and convenient way to order your kit and collect your sample from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Colorectal cancer screening increases the chance of finding cancer early when it is more likely to be cured. According to Ontario Health, when colorectal cancer is caught early, 9 out of 10 people can be cured.

The kit can be used by anyone between the age of 50 to 74 who is not eligible for OHIP or the Ontario Health FIT program. Please speak with your health care provider for more information.

You are not eligible to take the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) if you are:

  1. Currently in a high-risk screening program for colorectal cancer.
  2. Have been diagnosed with or regularly monitored for colorectal cancer in the last 5 years.
  3. Have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (such as, Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis).
  4. Have blood in urine (pee) or stool (poop) (for example, from hemorrhoids or constipation).
  5.  Have taken the test within the last 21 months.
Your test results will be available online a few days after we have received your sample. An email will be sent to you with a clickable link when your results are ready to be viewed on our secure online platform.

If the result is abnormal, this means that blood in your stool (poop) was detected. You will receive a call from LifeLabs’ clinical partner, Trillium Health Partners, within the next 1-2 business days. You may instead choose to contact your Telehealth/Primary Health Care provider to arrange for a colonoscopy to follow up. An abnormal result does not necessarily mean that you have colorectal cancer or pre-cancerous polyps, but it does mean that additional testing is needed. (Polyps are abnormal growths on the lining of the colon or rectum that can sometimes turn into cancer over time.)

If the result is normal, this means that no blood was detected in your stool (poop) sample. It is recommended to continue to monitor your health regularly, including screening for colorectal cancer with the fecal immunochemical test (FIT).

Invalid results: In a small number of cases, your result may come back invalid due to a sample collection error or a processing error. If the invalid result is due to a sample collection error, a replacement kit is available from LifeLabs at a reduced cost. If the invalid result is due to a processing error, LifeLabs will provide a replacement kit free of charge.

Your kit will be shipped to your regular mailbox. You should receive your kit between 3-7 business days from the date you ordered your kit.
Your sample can be returned by mail or by dropping your kit off at your closest LifeLabs location. To avoid having to do the test again, it is important to return your completed sample as soon as possible. It is best to mail it or drop it off within 2 days of collecting your sample because it needs to arrive at LifeLabs for testing within 14 days of collecting your stool (poop).
All Colorectal Health (FIT) kits are final sale.
Please note: Your kit must be used within six months of purchase.

The Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) is an information repository that gives authorized health care providers access to lab test orders and results from hospitals, community labs and public health labs. As patients move between hospitals, family physicians, home care and long-term care settings, OLIS makes viewing patients’ current and past test results easier and enables treatment decisions.
