Cervical Health (HPV) Kit

Testing for high-risk HPV types is an important step in detecting cervical cancer early.

However, many people aren’t able to complete the test in a doctor’s office or may be embarrassed or anxious about the collection process.

The Cervical Health (HPV) Kit is a quick, easy, and convenient way to collect your sample in the comfort and privacy of your home. You will have six months to use your kit. When you send your HPV sample to LifeLabs, it will be tested for high-risk HPV. Your results will be available online.

What is included with this kit?
The Cervical Health (HPV) Kit includes a diagnostic test, at-home collection supplies and a signed request form.

Important
HPV testing is currently not part of Ontario’s cervical screening program. Until HPV testing is implemented in the Ontario Cervical Screening Program, cervical screening with a Pap test is safe, accurate and allows people to receive key benefits of organized screening.

A convenient way to screen for HPV from the comfort of your home, no doctor’s visit required!

With a small swab, and easy-to-follow instructions, the power to test for HPV is in your hands.

Follow four simple steps to complete HPV testing.

  1. Order your kit. Our Cervical Health (HPV) Kit is delivered in discreet packaging to protect your privacy.
  2. Collect your sample using the swab included with your kit. Watch the short animated film or download the instructions.
  3. Ship your sample using the pre-paid mailer.
  4. Receive your results. Results can be viewed online using our secure platform.
An HPV test can be ordered as part of your cervical health testing. The test looks for the presence of 14 high-risk HPV types, including HPV16 and HPV18, which are responsible for almost all cervical cancer cases. Testing can tell you if you are infected with a high-risk HPV type. Early detection can help your doctor determine a treatment plan to prevent or treat cervical cancer.

The Cervical Health (HPV) Kit is available for anyone with a cervix aged 25 and over and sexually active. Even if you received the HPV vaccination, it is still recommended to get tested. To use the test, you must not be menstruating, pregnant, or have given birth in the last three months.

Your test results will be available online in 3-5 days after you send us back your kit.

If the result is HPV positive, it means the test detected a high-risk HPV type. This does not mean you have cancer. You will be contacted to book a follow-up appointment to answer your questions and for further assessment to determine if a Pap test or a colposcopy is needed. If you like, your results can be shared with your primary health care provider.

If the result is HPV negative, it means the test did not detect a high-risk HPV type. You are at low risk of cervical cancer. You may still require an in-person visit with a health care provider or further investigation if:

  • You previously had cervical cancer
  • Are immunodeficient/immunocompromised
  • Or experience abnormal bleeding during menstruation, between cycles, after sexual intercourse or any post-menopausal bleeding
Indeterminate or unsatisfactory results: In a small number of cases, your result may be indeterminate (meaning that the test didn't provide a clear negative or positive result) or unsatisfactory (for example, there were not enough cells present in the sample or your sample was contaminated) and may require a new sample or further follow-up. A clinical support team member will contact you to discuss this further.

Your kit will be shipped to your regular mailbox. You should receive your kit between 3-7 business days from the date you ordered your kit.

Your sample can be returned by dropping your kit off at your closest Canada Post or LifeLabs location.

All HPV kits are final sale. If your kit is damaged or an error occurs during the collection process, a reduced-cost replacement kit will be provided.

Please note: Your kit must be used within six months of purchase.

The Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) is an information repository that gives authorized health care providers access to lab test orders and results from hospitals, community labs and public health labs. As patients move between hospitals, family physicians, home care and long-term care settings, OLIS makes viewing patients’ current and past test results easier and enables treatment decisions to be made at the point-of-care.
